Talend Joins Other Industry Leaders to Open Industry’s First Open Source School

Open Source 101: Technology Training in France's Inaugural Open Source School

By Jean-Baptiste Onofre

The open source market is increasing by more than 10 percent a year-five times faster than traditional IT-and it is estimated that 4,000 positions are vacant due to the lack of educated professionals.  As our society becomes increasingly reliant on technology, it is inevitable that the global demand for Big Data, Open Source and IoT competence will continue to rise, as will the surge of job openings with a direct need for open source technology expertise. That is why I am thrilled that Talend is a founding partner of France's first Open Source School - dedicated to higher education training and continuing education for open source solutions (OSS).

This establishment is the very first school dedicated to Open Source and Talend is proud to support this initiative. We're looking forward to leveraging our technical expertise to help develop the next generation of leaders in the field of open source - with the overarching goal of furthering the advancement of major technologies such as big data, IoT, and machine learning. The Open Source School aims to close the specialized IT skills gap by inspiring and enabling technology education and development, as well as to encourage further interest in Open Source Technologies. It's an exciting step towards providing our future workforce with the skillsets needed to keep up with today's fast-paced digital age.

Here at Talend we look forward to collaborating with the school to help it keep pace with rapidly changing open source market advancements. As the school gets up and running, Talend representatives such as myself will meet periodically with other founding member companies to shape the curriculum and training program for the teachers who will serve as classroom instructors.

Students of the Open Source School will also have the opportunity to intern with the founding member companies, providing them with invaluable ‘real-world,' hands-on experience that will ultimately help graduates secure better employment opportunities. Recruitment for the Open Source School is already in full force - with its six campuses located in Bordeaux, Lille, Lyon, Montpellier, Nantes and Paris scheduled to open in September.

The Open Source School project is led by Smile, a European leader in open source integration and outsourcing, and EPSI, a private institution of higher education in computer science. In addition to gaining the support of private sector firms like Talend, Red Hat, OW2 and others, the Open Source School received € 1.4 million in initial funding from the French government as part of its Future Investment Program (API) to fuel the country's Big Data technology economy. In an effort to increase the overall number of skilled open source professionals as well as the caliber of professional IT talent, the Open Source School ‘Executive Education' program will also offer more than 200 continuous trainings and options for professional retraining.
